The 15 Best Wellness Books Of 2015

If you asked me to estimate the number of wellness-related books released in a given year, I wouldn't have half a clue. I would be able to tell you that more than 100 of them — probably closer to 200, if I'm being honest — made their way to the mindbodygreen offices in 2015, and someone on our editorial team looked at every single one.

That means two things: First, that the stacks of books littering our office make us appear much more well-read than we actually are. Second, that we're ideally positioned to give you the scoop on the books that are actually worth spending your hard-earned money and limited time on.

From raising your kid to raising your kitchen game, here are team mbg's picks for the year's best in wellness.

"This book wades through the often contradictory information that bombards us daily, and delivers more than 100 actionable tips that will improve every aspect of our health — body, mind, and soul. Readers will learn simple rules for getting a good night’s sleep, why a daily dose of sunlight is crucial, and which toxic cosmetics and kitchen products should be tossed. Here, authors Lipman and Claro teach us which foods help prevent Alzheimer’s, why sugar is so destructive, and how to bring 'good bacteria' into the digestive system — providing an arsenal of easy-to-process tips and guidelines to make us stronger, healthier, and happier." (Shannon Kaiser)

"Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally renowned nutrition expert and physician, examines the 15 top causes of premature death in America ― heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more ― and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives." (Amazon)

"Parenting expert Amy McCready reveals in this book that the solution [to 'the entitlement epidemic'] is to help kids develop healthy attitudes. By setting up limits with consequences and training them in responsible behavior and decision making, parents can rid their homes of bad attitudes and raise confident, resilient, and successful children. Whether starting from scratch with a young toddler or navigating the teen years, they'll find proven strategies to effectively quell entitled attitudes in their children." (Amazon)

"Sara Forte, beloved food blogger and author of the James Beard Award–nominated book The Sprouted Kitchen, cooks using bowls every day — creating sumptuous recipes colorful enough to serve guests, simple enough to eat with a spoon, and in amounts plentiful enough to have easy leftovers for lunch the next day. This visually stunning collection reflects a healthier approach to quick and easy cooking. In it, Sara offers delicious, produce-forward recipes for every meal." (Amazon)

"Every month, half a million vegetarians, vegans, Paleo followers, and gluten-free gourmets flock to Sarah Britton's adaptable and accessible recipes that make powerfully healthy ingredients simply irresistible. My New Roots is the ultimate guide to revitalizing one’s health and palate, one delicious recipe at a time. Whether readers are newcomers to natural foods or already devotees, they will discover how easy it is to eat healthfully and happily when whole foods and plants are at the center of every plate." (Amazon)

"At 61, Christie Brinkley still looks just as good (if not better) than she did back in the days of teased bangs and high-cut swimsuit bottoms. Luckily, her book Timeless Beauty offers real, natural, almost-free tips anyone at any age can follow. I can't promise following her suggestions will land you the cover of a magazine or on a list of the world's most beautiful people, but they certainly can't hurt. And if they leave you looking or feeling even a fraction as good as the sexagenarian, it's worth it." (Allie White)

"This brilliant, hilarious, and practical parody of Marie Kondo's best-seller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, explains how to rid yourself of unwanted obligations, shame, and guilt — and give your f*cks instead to people and things that make you happy." (Amazon)

"Why is the fact that I’m fat the most important thing for you to know about me? Well, because as far as body shapes go, fat ones are the most reviled in our society. Because my journey toward learning to love a body that I have been told is unworthy has been life-changing. Because learning to love my body as it is has convinced me that not only is it possible, but it’s necessary to living a truly happy and fulfilling life. Because I want you to have the opportunity to hear these revelations too. Because being fat and learning how to accept it has defined my mission as a body activist. So, WELCOME." (Jes Baker)

"So many of us live our lives on autopilot. We do the same thing every day: wake up, go to work, come home, and have dinner. Repeat. When I found myself drifting in that direction, I had to make a change. My life and SEAL's nomadic take-no-prisoners life-merging (or should I say colliding) for a period of time is what I needed. It was wild and unexpected. And while I got in the best shape of my life during my time with SEAL, the lessons I learned from him extended way beyond fitness." (Jesse Itzler)

"Ansari's book tackles how to date in a world with smartphones, online dating, and social media sites. The book is funny, but it's also rooted in sociological findings from a research project designed by Ansari and sociologist Eric Klinenberg. They gathered information from in-person focus groups, along with a 'Modern Romantics' sub-Reddit forum in which people around the world could answer questions about dating in the digital age." (Charlotte Lieberman)

"I choose to believe that our creative lives, like our lives in general, are defined by the choices we make; by the chances we take, or don't take; and by the way we respond to the unknown. This book has reaffirmed that belief in more ways than I can count — though if I tallied up the notes graffitiing the margins, you'd get an idea." (Allison Daniels)

"In this illuminating introduction for the modern-day soul searcher, Emma Mildon shines light on everything neo–New Age practices. With something for every type of spiritual seeker, The Soul Searcher’s Handbook offers easy tips, tricks, and how-to's for incorporating everything from dreamology and astrology to mysticism and alternative healing into your everyday life. This handbook is your #1 go-to guide — handy, accessible, entertaining, and packed with all the wisdom you need in one place." (Shannon Kaiser)

"In Make Your Own Rules Diet, Tara Stiles introduces readers to easy and fun ways to bring yoga, meditation, and healthy food into their lives. When people understand what they need, they can make rules that will help them become their best selves. In her rulebook, it’s no pain, all gain. Readers will not only learn to create their own rules but also to understand when something isn’t working, so they can update their rules.

Her approach takes readers from the kitchen to the mat in an effort to help them get to know themselves. After leading them through some basic guidelines for creating rules, Tara lays out tips, techniques, and practices to help you feel healthy from the inside out." (Shannon Kaiser)

"Let’s be real for a sec. Most of us don’t have time for an hour of yoga or 30 minutes of meditation every day. We’re overwhelmed as it is. Our spiritual practice shouldn’t add to that. That’s why Gabrielle handpicked 108 simple techniques to combat our most common problems: stress, burnout, frustration, jealousy, resentment. The stuff we have to deal with on a daily basis. This book is designed so that you can achieve peace and experience miracles now." (Shannon Kaiser)

"Mindy Kaling's highly anticipated follow-up to her first book is a collection of comedic essays; most of them explore Kaling’s life developing her show, navigating Hollywood, and dating a charming aide to President Obama. Along the way, she covers body image and career disappointments with her signature sense of humor." (Emma Loewe)
